2008
Tina Turner does her farewell tour this year, so Joh Miles is replaced (again) on this edition: Midge Ure, co-host of Live Aid, and the man behind Ultravos takes on this responsible task. For the first time in a long time, Fine Fleur is replaced by the Harlem Gospel Choir: 15 New York adolescents sing gospel, but also shine as backing vocalists and soloists, notably in the Beethoven-inspired ‘Joyful Joyful’. The American band ‘Live’ performs solid rock, but also the fragile ‘Overcome’, which they dedicate to the newly elected Barack Obama. Also unforgettable is the classical duo Igudesman & Joo, 2 talented musicians with a fine musical humour. A dream for the organisers becoming reality when Sinéad O’Connor agrees to perform ‘Troy’, even though she had not sung it in years. It leaves no one unmoved. Simple Minds, longtime fans of the Night of the Proms and Sinéad, were ecstatic when she joins them on stage singing along to ‘Belfast Child’, making it even more memorable.
